研究内容
英語教室では、各々の専門領域を活かして「言語」と「人間?社会?文化」や「教育」に関わる研究をしています。概要は以下の通りです。
Kaori Sasaki: Dr Kaori Sasaki’s research interests lie in: (i) cultural politics vis-à-vis language and power including articulation processes of cultural imaginations and representations of science, technologies and/or medicine; (ii) ‘bio-politics’ and ‘governmentality’ in Foucault’s term, their dynamics and sociohistorical development in particular; and (iii) further consideration and refinement of theoretical and methodological frameworks in cultural studies, sociology and science and technology studies. Her current research project, funded by the Ministry of Education (文科省科研) in Japan, is ‘Biopolitics through the usage of Electronic Health Records (EHR) in Japan---An attempt for Sociological and STS analysis on HER’ (18K18473); she also participates in a project funded by the Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare (厚労省科研) in Japan, entitled 'Study for Facilitating and Enhancing the Research Process of Secondary Usage of Big-data (21AC1001). Furthermore, in spring 2021, her co-edited book shall be published by Palgrave MacMillan (Humans and Devices in Medical Contexts: Case Studies from Japan, ISBN: 978-981-336-280-2); the volume aims to explore the ways in which socio-technical settings in medical contexts find varying articulations in a specific locale.
Kazuhiko Yamaguchi:Dr. Kazuhiko Yamaguchi’s interests lie in: (i) a cognitive-functional study of English language; (ii) linguistic typology (the study of the diversity of the languages of the world); and (iii) TESOL (Teaching of English to Other Speakers of Language) His current research projects are: (i) the description of BE-TO construction in English; (ii) the tendency of grammaticalization of auxiliary predicates in European and Asian languages; and (iii) the application of the corpus and cognitive linguistic approach to English phrasal verbs and the development of an effective teaching method of them.
Gregory Wheeler:Wheeler’s research is presently focused on Japanese medical professionals’ bedside manner and how it may often be perceived by non-Japanese patients. He is curious about exploring whether Japanese and non-Japanese patients may have different expectations concerning what is generally considered to be a “proper” bedside manner. Additionally, Wheeler has recently become interested in English by “native” speakers that may not always fit the strict definition of correct English. As he continues to research this topic, his hope is to place more emphasis on teaching this type of English in a classroom setting.
